My Story
Hello, I am Dietmar Ostermann, a wine collector and enthusiast. My friends call me "D". I started collecting fine wine in 1994. My hobby became my passion and in 2017 I began rating wines on VIVINO. Today I am among VIVINO's top 250 wine raters in the US.
During the COVID crisis I started a wine YouTube channel called "Decants with D". In over 50 episodes I discuss the basics of wine tasting as well as many wine grapes and fantastic wines. My YouTube channel and my VIVINO ratings are my own opinions and represent my tastes. I am completely independent and not sponsored by anyone.
I host a lot of wine tastings in my home on Long Island, NY. This led to the idea to also offer private virtual or in-person wine tasting events. Over the last few month I have hosted several corporate and private virtual wine tastings.
My Mission
I want people to drink great wine! My mission is to connect people with wines that they will enjoy, share, and even collect. I want my followers to feel informed and confident drinking, selecting, and talking wine. Whether it's picking a wine to pair with a special meal, choosing the perfect gift for a wine-lover in your life (without breaking the bank), or finding a great investment wine at auction, I am here to give objective opinions and assist in decisions making. I also strive to educate. Wine has a rich tradition and history. Ancient civilizations like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans started cultivating grapes for wine thousands of years ago. Wine is essentially history you can taste! What you pour into your glass, today, reflects the environment, climate, and geography where the grapes are harvested. Experts can taste a wine and accurately describe exactly where it comes from. I want everyone who enjoys wine to be informed and ready to join the conversation. From your first taste of champagne, to fond memories of the wine served on a wedding day, good wine, chosen well, can also tell the story of your own life. I am here to share my own discoveries to give you the background and exposure to explore with confidense and develope your own tastes.
